In these stills for MBC’s My Princess, the costuming of series star Kim Tae-hee
is really just a sly wink at the audience, because this has nothing to
do with her rags-to-riches Cinderella turn after her character, Lee
Seol, is discovered to be a real princess.
Instead, the scene
depicts Seol in a princess costume as a part-time gig, before she makes
the discovery of her true identity as lost royalty. Seol’s a
penny-pincher who’ll do just about anything (legal, one assumes) to earn
some spare cash, which is how she ends up wearing all this traditional
royal finery. It’s here that she happens to meet a Western princess, and
they end up taking a photo together.

What I really
want to find out, and what remains to be seen, is what kind of setting
leads to this whole commoner-to-princess storyline. Will the drama
employ a fantasy twist that revives the old monarchy? Will it create an
alternate reality where the monarchy never ended, a la Goong? Or will it do something else altogether? I’m itching to know.

Kim Tae Hee’s bare face. Although she didn’t have any makeup on, her clear skin and superior facial features still shone through.

your instructors to receive one-on-one private lessons, then who would
they be?
Well it looks like the princess had some suggestions of her own for
her ‘princess lessons.’ On the 14th episode of MBC Drama “My Princess”
that was aired on the 17th, Lee Seol princess (Kim Tae Hee) revealed her
wish list of instructors.
Lee Seol returns to her palace and receives a new boring “princess”
lesson schedule from ‘Deputy Director Kim’ (Hae-Young’s replacement).
She glances at the ‘luxurious’ schedule filled with cello, waltz, and
horse-back riding lessons and reacted, “I appreciate your work but I
don’t like it. I’ll just come up with my own lesson schedule.”

Then a moment later, she writes up her own extensive list of
teachers/study schedule. Her new study schedule entitled “Lee Seol’s
Princess Lessons” includes the following:

After finishing her wish list, Lee Seol seems pleased and excited as
she hands it over to ‘Deputy Director Kim’ and exclaims, “You can round
them up by the end of this week, right? Please show me your
capabilities!” and leaves the room.
Wow, seriously, what an awesome list of instructors! Personally, if
they were my instructors for real, I’d probably look forward to every
single private lesson and wouldn’t mind having lessons all day long lol!
But I’m not so sure if I’d be able to concentrate well during
classes…hmmm :D So who’s on your wish list of male/female instructors? I
would love to learn Japanese from Hiroshi Tamaki from “Nodame
Cantabile”! Any recommendations for a better dream team? ;)

Kim Tae-hee is making her official entrée into the
Japanese market, and is currently looking at projects with the Japanese
agency she signed with last year. On March 3, a rep from her agency
said, “In the latter half of the year, she will be increasing her
activities in Japan. She’s looking for all kinds of projects, whether
dramas or films.”
This comes as Kim wraps work on her most recent drama, My Princess,
which, if not her most successful project in terms of popularity or
reach, is probably her most successful in terms of acting. After playing
the bubbly, lovable Princess Seol, she has received favorable
evaluations of her performance for practically the first time in her
decade-long career, which is a pretty big divergence from the usual
reviews that have dogged her dramas and movies. For many of them, she’s
been called a pretty face but flat in delivery, as she was in her last
drama, 2009′s IRIS. It’s difficult to believe she ever had
trouble emoting when you consider Seol’s range of emotions, from her
tearful outbursts to her bright, winsome cheer.
I would have expected Kim to make her big Japan push last year, riding the wave of the IRIS press machine, but perhaps My Princess will do better. It’s true that IRIS wasn’t as successful in Japan as initially hoped for, and at least My Princess has Hallyu fave Song Seung-heon, which ought to help buoy interest within the Japanese market (and from the ajummas!).
And while her tight drama filming schedule may be over, Kim’s
schedule is as packed as ever with CF and photo shoots lined up, as well
as meetings for another role to take on this year. Personally, I’m
hoping Kim capitalizes on her recent progress and opts for another
bright role. Kim Tae-hee attempting serious, badass, or dark? Not so
much in the way of convincing. Kim Tae-hee being sunny and effervescent?
