Eric confirms Myung-wol the Spy
It’s official:
Eric’s post-army comeback drama will not be the action-packed
Poseidon but instead the lively spy romance
Myung-wol the Spy (as
previously rumored), co-starring
Han Ye-seul.
She plays a North Korean spy; he’s the South Korean Hallyu star she
falls in love with. Can you see the hijinks ensuing already? His
character is named Kang-woo, and his fame level is about on par with
Best Love’s
Dokko Jin — which is to say, at the very top of the showbiz ladder.
From the Italian suits he wears to the fancy mineral water he drinks,
everything he’s associated with skyrockets in popularity.
The drama isn’t being described as a straight-up romantic comedy;
it’s a “fresh new entry in the spy-melo genre.” Anytime the word “melo”
gets added to something I get nervous about excessive angsting, but it
sounds like this drama is aiming to be fun and entertaining more than
intense. Plus, we’ve got the director of
Sungkyunkwan Scandal onboard, and he’s shown he can balance the lighthearted with the serious in a refreshing way.
Eric’s last drama was the 2008 fusion sageuk
Strongest Chil Woo,
which had some nice moments but was also very silly at times. But if
you want to see him actually acting in something good, my vote goes to
Que Sera Sera, where he played a character who was often hard to like but compelling in his intensity.
Myung-wol the Spy premieres on July 4, after
Baby-Faced Beauty.
